Sajida foundation with the support of Concern World Wide, Dhaka city corporation, and Water Aid is designed to support these street dwellers to get access to these basic facilities. Maniknagar PDC (Pavement Dwellers’ Centre), is one of the currently operating PDCs in Dhaka, where children and women dwellers are the prior concern.
We, Paraa got involved to the implementation at early middle stage. While redesigning, the primary focus was to create a space that reflects each and every member of the Amrao Manush family. Engaging street dwellers in the design process was the core idea. A total of five workshops in various participatory approaches were conducted to understand their perspectives about the idea of home and school.
ENGAGEMENT IN EXECUTION
Paraa focuses on multi stakeholder engagement in delivering a project and encourages participation throughout the phases of execution. Being a family of multidisciplinary members, the strength of Paraa is to design holistic approach to realize and explore overall perspective of a project through engagement. Engagement creates a platform of interplay that provides all components the project accounted for. Paraa focuses on initiating, facilitating and coordinating this interplay through participatory events, workshops and trainings. This enables us for
o Direct (PDC members) and indirect (Sajida Foundation) users’ oriented delivery
o Guiding and developing individual commitments in envisioning ‘Amrao Manush’ project
o Complying with limitations and exploring the scopes in resources
o Considering a range of viewpoints and perspectives
o Making all the actors accountable to their roles
o Offering scopes for innovation to overcome future challenges that may arise in running the project
Paraa focuses on designing both architectural space and programs. Paraa believes that a functional space is a reservoir of energy that needs to be generated and nurtured by the users through appropriate activities and programs. Only then it can sustain. This require a multi stakeholder approach that demonstrates collaboration with all possible actors for their resources and supports. Our concern was not only the pavement dwellers or Sajida Foundation, but also other institutions and organizations supporting the project.

PARAA AND AMRAO MANUSH
As Paraa always focuses on engaging users of architectural services, the project was designed to integrate participatory events as required throughout the project progression. The project is satisfactorily completed to set as another example of Paraa’s fine practice of participatory architecture.
The structure and the spaces took shape through five participatory workshops involving the Sajida Foundation staffs, members, students, artists and the Paraa Family. The entire process is simplified as:
WORKSHOP 01: ‘ESHO AKSATHE GORI’
Focus: Engagement, sharing of ideas, team work
The first workshop on team building was aimed to convey the importance of team work in securing anddemanding for rights. Dealing with challenges and achieving personal as well as community goals demand working together and being cooperative. Paraa anticipated to transfer these messages through participatory workshop designed to facilitate a friendly environment that encourage sharing ideas and retain a positive energy with ice breaking games and energizers.
WORKSHOP 02:‘AMADER CHAOA’
Focus: Spaces requirement, conceptual layouts, program analysis, ideal home
This one was about their space requirements so that the findings can be addressed in architectural
WORKSHOP 03: ‘AMADER BASHA AMADER NOKSHA’
Focus: Jamdani motifs to develop elevation
The third workshop was an architectural design workshop that produced beautiful Jamdani motifs after an intense brainstorming session. The design elegancy of Jamdani sharee symbolizing women empowerment inspired the design process. The motifs created by the members were later incorporated into the elevation through brick bonding.
WORKSHOP 04: ‘AMADER SWAPNO’
Focus: Dreams and aspirations
The fourth workshop was conducted to realize the dwellers’ dreams and aspirations and how this project could help to materialize those. Designing a space that reflects and retains their aspirations was the major objective requiring their participation throughout the phases and Paraa got closer to achieve it at this stage of the project.
WORKSHOP 05: ‘CHOLO SHAJAI’
Focus: Pottery painting, origami, painting, wall painting
The final workshop was a joyful occasion to celebrate their new home MANIKNAGAR PDC. The environment was electrifying and activities were intense hosting 40 participants majority of whom were young girls and boys alongside adult males and females. To facilitate the activities designed and coordinated by Tahmid Rahman, Paraa efficiently resourced contributions from teachers, professionals and students who shared responsibilities with Paraa family.
The project architect was Tahmid Rahman and the events were hosted by Tarannum Nibir, assisted by Rayed Khan.
