On Friday 11th March, we broke ground in the LEEDO Peace Home’s Growing Up project. The brief was to design an urban garden and playground for the children living and staying in the home. This is the much anticipated urban garden and playground designed and developed by team Mritikka – a group of 3rd year architecture students from BRAC University (Salimah (Remi), Sarah and Rafid). They have spent the last few weeks learning to detail, procure, manage and lead.

On the day, they were able to bring along some friends.  Our project co-ordinator Farasha, was unable to attend and sorely missed by all.  So, the Paraa team, in Farasha’s absence, was led by Arefin, with support from Prince, Ruhul, Shariaz and Nusrat were there to provide support to the students, as well as LEEDO’s full team.  We also had some support from fellow BRAC Uni Architecture students:  Momo, Tehreem, Mobasher, Nusrat, Mahfuz and Tasliman. We we also lucky to have with us young architect Nazmul Nayeem to assist with the bamboo construction methods and BUET Architecture student Shihab.

Team Mritikka put together a design inspired by the children, and this low-budget, high energy project is providing opportunities for all of us to both learn and make an impact on the lives of the children.

So along with the carpenters, builders, day labourers and the children we began making the playground a reality. The previous day they had already broken down some walls to create a larger space.

We had a slow start, but as the sun blazed, and everybody was working up some serious sweat, we began to appreciate that this project will be realised very soon. Breaking walls, digging the ground, repainting, making light installations, preparing for the platform and still finding time to play games.  Intense, in short.

With more than 20+ people involved in some way or another it was quite a day. Below are some pictures from the day. We will upload some more images as the work progresses and also some reflections from the students. IMG_0457
